Analysis on “A little cloud” by James Joyce

Zero focalization: In the beginning of the story there is a sense of zero (God) facalization, fully represented and described in some paragraphs by feelings transferred into words (his melancholy mood-his struggling against fortune-his level of shyness (p. 01) – his longing to express himself (p. 02)). We see that in addition to explanation of physical traits, inner thoughts are made clear and characteristics referred.

Stream of consciousness: is apparent (the part in paragraph 3 which not only describes his sadness but goes into a bit further explanation and involves other things from his thoughts) – (in page 6, the long paragraph, stating further thought toward the contrast made between his life and Gallaher’s)

Inteal: the part which includes the dialogue is supposed to have an inteal focalization due to the fact that the characters are familiar with each other as much as their voice is. Some traits are seen but full and deep thinking (and stream) is avoided.

Gallaher: he has got the “stock” character due to his idea of marrying a woman who will fully contribute to his financial status. He thinks of marriage as a tool for more reputation and success (page 6, she will have a good fat account - page 7, no tying up). He stands as a “dynamic” figure based on the evidence that he was a wild disruptive and disobeying young man, drinking and borrowing money and getting mixed up in shady affairs (page 2, par. 2). However, he went through a change of lifestyle leading one in well-cut tweed suit and his talent was put into proper use (page 1, par. 1).

Chandler: he is “round” in characterization. It has the quality of a real life meaning that sometimes one wants to change his idea toward a matter and this is where roundness comes in. he gets married and is delighted by that. However, he comes up with a sense (Gallaher’s impression) that he is a bit devastated. He even thinks of getting divorce, going about the publishing and leaving everything behind. Unpredictably, in the end, he doesn’t go through that for he can’t really do it. There are some signs of change but eventually he stands “static” generally.
